Norm Simons, Park coordinator, Denali National Park, Alaska. * * * Ranger/EMS 41 I like the fact that firefighters evolved into paramedics. Frankly, firefighters were getting stagnant. Because of modern construction techniques, there aren't near as many fires today as there were twenty years ago. In turn, there are a lot more medical emergencies. My wife was a medic for ten years. I've been a medic for eleven. She's since become a nurse. It's worked out to our benefit. We've been able to raise our three children with one of us always being home. She worked one shift, I worked another. Our day offs were arranged so she had a day to herself, I had a day to myself, and we had a day together. I don't know about anybody else, but it worked great for our marriage. We haven't had to have anybody else raise our children, and that's a big plus, because I loved my kids and I got to raise them, not the television or day care.
